About Matthew

\n

I’m Matthew Pillay, based in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, and a proud former student of St. Michael’s Institution. I work across photography, drone imaging, website design and development, Arduino-based systems, and digital visual creation.

\n

My background includes 25 years of technical engineering experience working with industrial equipment and gas turbine systems, together with more than 20 years working with visual tools and creative media.

\n

Over time, these technical and creative paths naturally came together. Today they shape how I approach visual storytelling, problem-solving, and digital work — with structure, clarity, and attention to detail.

\n

Through Matthew Pillay Atelier, I bring these areas together into one practical and creative workspace where photography, digital design, embedded electronics, and AI-assisted visual workflows support each other.

\n

My Approach

\n

I prefer work that feels natural, structured, and intentional.

\n
    \n
  • Not over-processed
  • \n
  • Not artificial
  • \n
  • Not complicated without reason
  • \n
\n

I also enjoy working creatively with the tools and materials available to me. Many of my setups involve adapting or repurposing existing equipment, recycled materials, and kit-bashed components to build practical solutions and miniature visual scenes. This hands-on approach keeps the work flexible, resourceful, and grounded in real craftsmanship.

\n

Whether I’m photographing a landscape, designing a website, building an Arduino system, or staging miniature scenes for toy photography, the goal is always the same — to create something practical, meaningful, and well-crafted.

What I Work With

\n
\n

Photography

\n

Landscape, environmental scenes, portraits, and atmospheric compositions using natural light and intentional framing.

\n
\n
\n

Drone Imaging

\n

Aerial perspectives that reveal structure, geometry, and scale from viewpoints not normally seen.

\n
\n
\n

Toy Photography

\n

One of my long-standing creative interests, built around a personally curated collection developed over many years. I work with rare and timeless hobby collectibles, creating cinematic miniature scenes through lighting, composition, and practical staging techniques.

\n
\n
\n

Website Design & Development

\n

Designing and building responsive portfolio and business websites with clean structure, performance, and visual clarity.

\n
\n
\n

Arduino Development

\n

Custom microcontroller-based projects involving automation ideas, sensors, visualization dashboards, and embedded systems.

\n
\n
\n

Digital Visual Work

\n

Creative production using Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects, together with modern AI image prompting and visual experimentation.

Outside Work

\n

I enjoy spending time in outdoor environments and travel-based photography, especially in locations where landscape, light, and atmosphere come together naturally. These experiences continue to influence how I approach composition across both large environments and miniature scenes.

\n

Matthew Pillay Atelier

\n

An atelier is simply a workshop — a place where craft develops over time.

\n

This space reflects how I work today: combining engineering experience, creative practice, and modern digital tools into visual work and digital solutions that are personal, structured, and reliable.

\n

Available for photography and website design services. Please get in touch to discuss further details.
